Are You traveling along the scenic winding roads of the Kochi–Madurai Highway (NH 85) toward Munnar, Kerala, Cheeyappara Waterfalls and Valara Waterfalls are two must-see natural attractions. Located just 2 km apart, these cascading falls provide a refreshing break, breathtaking photo opportunities, and a taste of Kerala's lush Western Ghats.
Cheeyappara is famous for its striking seven-step cascade that pours down a massive granite cliff side right beside the highway.
The Vibe: Energetic and accessible. You do not need to hike to see it—the waterfall is right next to the road.
What to Expect: A misty breeze as water hits the rocks, vibrant roadside stalls, and plenty of space to stretch your legs and take photos.
Local Treats: Grab freshly sliced pineapples or raw mangoes sprinkled with chili powder and salt, or sip a cup of hot Kerala spiced tea from the local vendors.
Located slightly closer to Neriamangalam, Valara offers a wilder, more serene experience. The waterfall plunges nearly 1,000 feet into a deep forest ravine fed by the Deviyar River.
The Vibe: Picturesque and tranquil.
The Viewpoint: Unlike Cheeyappara, Valara is viewed from a designated viewpoint across a valley, surrounded by dense jungle canopy.
Nature & Wildlife: The lush green forest surrounding Valara is home to diverse bird species and small forest wildlife, making it a favorite for nature lovers.
Best Time to Visit: June to December is ideal. The monsoon rains transform both falls into roaring cascades. During peak summer months (March to May), the water flow can drop significantly.
Safety First: Rocks near the water flow at Cheeyappara are very slippery. Mind the warning signs and avoid stepping onto wet, mossy surfaces.
Parking & Traffic: Parking is along the road shoulder. Drive slowly through this stretch, as pedestrians often cross the road between food stalls and viewpoints.
Monkeys Ahead: Bonnet macaques frequent the roadside. Keep food items, bags, and sunglasses secured.
